This week, we have a very full update on a number of fantastic learning opportunities that the children have experienced over the past couple of weeks.

World Children’s Day Assembly

We were delighted that the pupils attended a special celebration of children’s human rights on 20th November – World Children’s Day – in the form of an online assembly to explore the topic of ‘climate change and children’s rights’ with Children and Young People’s Commissioner for Scotland Nicola Killean.

At the assembly, the children

  • learned about the link between climate change and children’s rights
  • heard from other children who have created climate campaigns in their local area
  • felt inspired to share their views with children across Scotland.

We were very proud of how respectfully the children took part and of the way they interacted with the topic.

Our World from Space Workshop

The Children in the P4 to 7 class had an excellent experience when they also travelled to the Oban Rockfield Centre on 20th November to take part in workshops with staff from SAMS (The Scottish Association for Marine Science).  They explored how we can learn more about the ocean through satellites and how climate change is impacting our planet.  The staff were very impressed with how well the children engaged and participated and the children were very impressed with the snow that fell on the way home! Thanks to our amazing drivers Valerie and Anthonie for getting everyone home safely. Check out the photos here: https://www.tayvallich.argyll-bute.sch.uk/our-world-from-space-workshop/

Children in Need

We had another fantastic day of  fundraising for Children in Need this year, with spots and pyjamas, Pudsey-related challenges, poster-making, a duck derby and some really important learning and reflection about what Children in Need Day is all about. Colin the Caterpillar also made an appearance and we were delighted that Flora was the happy recipient of a cake to take home to her family when she won the raffle. The final total raised at the end of the fundraiser was a fantastic £125. Well done everybody. Woodland Detectives

As you will be aware, over the last month the pupils in P1 to 5 have been working with staff from Kilmartin Museum and NatureScot on the Woodland Detective Project which has enabled them to build on their prior learning about the Celtic Rainforest at Taynish through practical activities that link to learning experiences and outcomes from across the curriculum. We are very grateful to Kilmartin Museum and NatureScot for providing us with this fantastic learning experience, which involved two half days of workshops in school, one day out at Taynish Nature Reserve and a further half day out planting trees in the woodland near to school. Particular thanks go to Mrs Jacquelyn Condie of Kilmartin Museum for arranging and leading on the whole project and Heather Goodwin of NatureScot who is always such a fabulous supporter of our children’s learning around environmental sustainability and biodiversity.
