The pupils, staff and community of Tayvallich school never cease to amaze me with the fantastic teaching, learning and play opportunities that they make happen. This week I am particularly grateful to Miss Logan, who organised a visit from Mia Leng (an ex-Tayvallich pupil) from SAMS.
P1-4 were so lucky to have Mia talk to us about all things life below water, which links closely to our Life Below Water (Global Goals) topic. We were exploring the importance of sound to the marine world and even got to go on a treasure hunt to find different orca fins! The P5-7s also joined us after break so that all the children could link up to measure the size of porpoises, common dolphins and even humpback whales! During this, the children were investigating the size differences between species of marine mammals and how this affects their behaviour and survival.
The children were learning about how animals have adapted to their specific environments in the marine world, and used this knowledge to design a new species. We also had an introduction to marine cetaceans and pinnipeds on the west coast of Scotland and some of their iconic characteristics and identifying features.
This was such an excellent part of our Learning for Sustainability priority.

Parents’ Evenings
As always, it was a joy to meet or talk with you this week about your child’s learning and progress and celebrate their successes with you. We hope you feel as proud of them as we do!
Joint Learning Day – Wednesday 5th March
We will have three fantastic activities for the children on Wednesday:
- Jacquelyn Condie from Kilmartin Museum will be leading a Sewing for Hope workshop. This will involve making fabric squares, rather than sewing. You can find out more information here: https://vimeo.com/ntlmuseumsscot/rhrh
- Arthur Ker, acclaimed local artist and writer and former BBC and film and theatre designer will be reading from his children’s book based around our local wildlife and animals and showing the children how he created the illustrations.
- We will look at some fabulous videos made by local film-maker Rowan Aitchison about Jobs in Nature.
Jacquelyn has said that it would be really helpful if, for her workshop, the children could bring in any scraps of fabric you may have lying around at home, to add to the designs they make.
As you will know from the information and consent forms issued this week, pupils who have not ordered a school packed lunch will need to bring one from home on Wednesday.
World Book Week
Thursday 6th is World Book Day is next Thursday and Miss Fraser and Miss Logan are planning some activities to promote literacy and celebrate the day. The children are invited to come in wearing something home-created that represents a/their favourite book character but if they do not want to do this, then normal school dress is also fine.
Fabulous Family Fridays
If those of you who have volunteered to come and talk to the children about your work have a spare Friday afternoon over the next few weeks, please let us know and we can plan the next FFF!
School site
You are politely reminded that the school site is private property and can only be used by members of the school community during the school day and by arrangement. It is not open to the public or members of the school community at other times.
Have a lovely weekend.
